Adam Rutherford: All right and to finish off with, it is not often that we have apologies from China's glorious leader, but he has made a basic scientific error, I see.

Daniel Cressey: That's right. Wen Jiabao made a bit of an error when he was talking to a school student, he said these three types of rocks were sedimentary, magmatic and volcanic.

Adam Rutherford: Oh! Duh! School boy error!

Daniel Cressey: School boy error!! As every fool knows, the three types of rock are sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic.

Adam Rutherford: Ah! The shame, can you imagine a premier of such status making such a scientific error?

Daniel Cressey: I cannot imagine any other world leader who would be foolish enough to say such a thing?

Adam Rutherford: So this apology is unusual for the Chinese premier?

Daniel Cressey: It would be fair to say that China has failed to apologize for other past mistakes.

Kerri Smith: Dan, do you know what makes him feel strongly enough about rock types, who want to apologize for this error?

Daniel Cressey: Well, he was trained as a geologist and rocks are hugely important.

Adam Rutherford: Especially to geologists. So finding out that that he was in fact a geologist does make this error slightly more significant, but Dan, how is the Chinese media reacting to this?

Daniel Cressey: Well, the general feeling seems to be that actually the Chinese premier's reputation has been enhanced by being humble enough to admit his mistake, for instance the Xinhua News Agency says, "Wen has gained a reputation as a man of the people over the years.", whereas the Danwei website notes, "needless to say, the apology burnishes the established reputation of Wen as a humble, down-to-earth, grandfatherly leader, even if, as a graduate of the Beijing Institute of Geology, he really ought to have known such a basic information".

Adam Rutherford: Well, we could not agree more. Okay, thanks Danny boy! That is it from this week's glorious Nature podcast. Next time, the makings of earth-like planets and brain cells involved in postnatal depression. I am Adam Rutherford.
